how did you decide on your career?

im starting my senior year in High School and i thought i knew what i wanted to do with my life, but i relised that career just isnt for me. How did you all finally know what you wanted to do for a living? Did it just come to you? And how do i know i will actually like the career before spending thousands of dollars to go to school for it?
