How come on AMERICAN coins, from 1/2 dollar to dime, all the President's are facing the left, except the penny

I noticed this during my math class today....a friend of mine actually pointed it out and it's a pretty interesting question... can anyone give me a real reason.... and also, how come the penny is only one (minus a few recent ones) that is made of a different metal??
